President Truman

Truman, (born May 8, 1884, Lamar, Missouri, U.S.—died December 26, 1972, Kansas City, Missouri), 33rd president of the United States (1945–53), who led his country through the final stages of World War II and through the early years of the Cold War.

Truman Doctrine

This is a doctrine stated by President Truman stating that the U.S. will defend by financial support, or military force, any nation dealing with Soviet Union aggression.

It called for United States economic and military opposition to Soviet aggression whenever and wherever it was encountered 

The Soviet Union sees this doctrine as an official declaration of war.

Marshall Plan

This was a financial plan to aid recovering European countries after WW2.

Soviet Aggression

The WARSAW Treaty organization was created between the Soviet Union and some Eastern European nations. This alliance was in response to the NATO. The United States and the U.S.S.R. will be at odds during the Cold War. Both trying to outdo the other. 

North Atlantic Treaty Organization

NATO

This is a treaty between many Western European countries and the U.S. to protect one another from Soviet Aggression.

McCarthyism

An ideology of going around and calling someone a 'commie' and having them investigated. Many people were wrongfully accused, neighbor often turned against neighbor.

Un-American Activities Committee

Investigated people for acts or beliefs in communism.

Became widely known for investigating Hollywood and their ties to communist parties. The Hollywood 10 was investigated under this committee.


Containment

Containment was a United States policy using numerous strategies to prevent the spread of communism abroad. A component of the Cold War, this policy was a response to a series of moves by the Soviet Union to enlarge its communist sphere of influence in Eastern Europe, China, Korea, and Vietnam. 

John F Kennedy

John Fitzgerald Kennedy (May 29, 1917 – November 22, 1963), often referred to by his initials JFK, was an American politician who served as the 35th president of the United States from 1961 until his assassination in 1963. 

Korean War

North Korea will seek to invade South Korea and try to force communism. North Korea will be aided by China and the Soviet Union.

NATO will in turn support South Korea. General MacArthur wanted to use the atomic bomb on North Korea, similar to Japan, and is replaced by Truman with General George Marshall.

Bay of Pigs Invasion

A failed CIA operation to overthrow Fidel Castro's leadership and Che' Guevara's influence in Cuba.

Cuban Missile Crisis

The Soviet Union stores their missiles in Cuba, which is close to the U.S. and makes U.S. leaders uncomfortable, this starts a military standoff. The U.S. sets up a Naval Blockade and threatens to attack. Cuba also is geared up ready to fire as well. With knowledge of MAD, both decide to stand down and end up talking things out over the phone.

The Soviet Union would remove their missiles from Cuba if the U.S. removed theirs from Turkey.

Arms Race

This will be between the U.S. and the Soviet Union with both trying to outdo the other through military weapons.

Berlin Airlift

The Soviet Union will block Western Europe from entering into West Berlin with supplies from the Marshall Plan. 

President Truman will issue an airlift dropping the supplies into West Berlin by airplane.

Space Race

After Sputnik was launched, the space race bagan. The U.S. wanted to beat the Soviet Union to the moon.

NASA

Agency created to further the U.S. in Space Exploration.

Moon Landing, 1969

Neil Armstrong lands on moon.
