Infancy and Childhood
Understanding Psychology Book is what is used to guide this pacing.
Day 1: For this lesson, you will begin with the lab LEARNING LANGUAGES. To make this more interesting, replace 2 of the 5 fake words with actual ASL signs. Have the students answer the analysis and application questions. Q1 at the end of class together as a class, Q2 in their small group, and Q3 as an exit ticket.
Chapter 2 will be covered in 4 days.
There are many types of ways to do this.
Warm Up Options: Day 1 warm up is asking if there was a time that they felt they were so sure of something and yet they were wrong. Day 2 warm up is to ask the students if a study was done and the results were groundbreaking, but the study mistreated those who participated, did the results make up for the treatment of the people. Day 3 warm up ask students if they think paying people to participate in medical studies, like taking medicine or using creams, is ethical. Day 4 warm up ask students what their main takeaways for the chapter are.
Day 2: Divide into expert groups, one group makes a timeline over fetal development, one group makes a timeline over Newborn development, one group a timeline over Language Acquisition, one group a mind-map over the Case Study. All groups need to answer the questions at the bottom of their paper.
Day 3: This is a 2 day activity, Day 3 & 4 work together. Divide and Conquer. In Lesson 2 & 3 have the students divide the chapter amongst their group, read and explain their sections. (The sections are Cognitive Development, Emotional Development, Making Smarter Computers, Parenting Styles, Social Development, & Moral Development) So you will need groups of 6 working together. The students then answer the questions in the Lesson 2 & 3 Review on page 67 & 78, as well as the analyzing primary sources questions, which are on pg. 69.
Day 4: Students will write a "One Pager" stating how young children that they have seen, around 1-2, show signs of emotional attachment when out and about, how often the child makes contact with the parent, how often or far the child moves away to explore on their own, and how the child responds to unfamiliar people or things. They also need to answer what are the signs of separation anxiety and emotional attachment are in this paper. Lastly, they will answer the questions on page 79, Q 1-12
